On Christmas Eve

Preparations for Christmas Eve dinner: the food was the same (such as a smörgåsbord of starters, e.g. different kinds of herring, sillsalla- a salad which is made with chopped carrots, beetroot, pickles - sometimes includes potato - and topped with whipped cream that is died pink with beetroot juice. Salmon, whitefish, roe with smetana. Sausages, salami, a cheese platter...) but the faces around the table were different this year. My sister and her Austrian husband have moved to Australia for a few years. Mr. Blue eyes's 90-year-old mother Inga was too frail to join us, and my sister-in-law Solveig also spent Christmas with other relatives. So it was just our family of 5, grandma and grandpa, and Rina's boyfriend Tommi.

Mr. Blue eyes making sillsalla. Totti made the topping.

After dinner grandpa played the accordion, while the rest of us settled down to listen, open Christmas presents, and thankfully digest our dinner...
